“Do you have the cookies?” I demand as Wrecker enters the house, eyeing the tray in his hands. “You didn’t forget the cookies, did you? Those had better be the cookies.”

“I’ve got the cookies, Dylan.” Wrecker sounds amused, and I let out a whoosh of relief as he pulls off the foil, revealing a platter of delicious looking desserts. Desserts with little brown lumps.

“Those aren’t nuts, are they?” My eyes narrow. “He could be allergic to nuts.” I moan, smacking my forehead. “I don’t even know if my own son is allergic to nuts. I could kill my kid and not even mean to!”

Trick makes a sound like he’s trying not to laugh, but fuck him. I don’t want my son dead. I only just met him, dammit.

“They’re oatmeal raisin and chocolate chip, Dylan,” Wrecker replies calmly. “No nuts. Have you considered tossing back a Klonopin before he gets here?”

“Forgive me for being a little nervous that I’m about to have my son over for the first time.”

“He doesn’t actually know he’s your son, so I’m not sure it counts,” Trick says, and I shoot him a glare.

“It counts.” I look down at my UnderArmour sweatpants, Nike sneakers, and Stanford tee. “Do I look like a dad? I don’t know what dads wear. I mean, my dad mostly wears a three-piece suit and tie, but that seems a little formal for Hank.”

“My dad’s more of a polo shirt and golf pants sort of man,” Wrecker replies, “but I think you’re fine as you are. What do you think, Trick?”

“I dunno.” Trick shrugs. “I grew up in foster care.” I look up in surprise, and Wrecker looks equally stunned. “So don’t look to me for tips.”

“How is it I’ve known you for nearly ten years and didn’t know that?” I ask, and Trick shrugs again.

“Never came up.”

I blink, realizing that’s true. I consider my bros my family, but we don’t talk much about life before college. We mostly stick to business and sports and women. Though I guess the fact that Trick never has anybody over for holidays should have clued me in.

“Where’s Allin?” I ask. “I promised Hank that he’d be here. He’s really excited to see him.”

“He’s coming over after he finishes up at the gym.” Wrecker rolls his eyes. “What else would he be doing?”

“I’ve been encouraging him to open a gym or do something to prepare for the future,” Trick says. “Since he can't play ball forever. But he doesn’t want the responsibility.”

“Speaking of responsibility…” Wrecker raises an eyebrow at me. “I can’t even remember the last time you took a day off work. Is the Apocalypse here and the Horsemen just fell off their ponies?”

I wave the words away. “I’ve taken off work before.”

“When?” Trick shoots back, and I frown, thinking.

“Three years ago in June. I took off five days.”

“You had an appendectomy.” Wrecker’s voice is dry. “Then you went back to work two days before you were supposed to. Name a time that wasn’t a medical emergency.
